Chat & messaging
Chat & messaging
Message your whole team, a group, a role, or a single person — share photos, videos, GIFs, polls, events and posts, and react, reply, edit, pin and mute along the way.
What this covers
Chat keeps every team conversation in one place. Every team has an always-present team chat that includes all members automatically, and you can also start one-to-one messages, custom groups and role-based chats. Conversations carry text with mentions, plus photos, videos, GIFs, polls, shared events, posts and line-ups. Unread badges, typing indicators and new messages all update live, so you always see the latest without refreshing.
Open chat from the Chats tab in the bottom navigation on mobile, or the Chat entry in the sidebar on the web. On wide screens the web view shows your chat list on the left and the open conversation on the right.
The kinds of chats
You can hold four kinds of conversations, each suited to a different group of people:
- Team chat — one per team, always at the top, and everyone on the team is in it automatically.
- Direct message — a private one-to-one conversation with another team-mate. Its tile and header always show the other person's name and photo.
- Group chat — a conversation with a hand-picked set of members you choose.
- Role-based chat — a chat whose membership follows a role (for example everyone with the "Coach" role); people join or leave it automatically as their role changes.
Start a chat or group
To open the new-chat sheet, tap the floating New chat button on mobile or the New chat button on the web. From there you can start a direct message or create a group.
To start a direct message:
- Open the New chat sheet — team members are listed under "Chat with", with a "Search members" field to narrow the list.
- Tap the person you want. If you've messaged them before, your existing conversation opens; otherwise a fresh one is created and opened for you.
To create a group or role chat:
- In the New chat sheet, tap Create group chat.
- Give the group a name, then choose the chat type: Custom Group Chat (pick the members), Team Chat (includes everyone), or Role Based Chat (pick the roles whose members join automatically).
- Tap Create Group — the new conversation opens ready to use.
An empty auto-join group stays hidden from its members until the first message is sent, so nobody sees a blank conversation before it's really underway.
React, reply, edit and pin
Long-press any message to bring up a quick emoji row (with a "+" for the full picker) and an action menu. From there you can:
- Reply to a message — or swipe right on it. Tapping a reply quote scrolls to and highlights the original message.
- React with an emoji. Reactions show as emoji-and-count chips under the message; tap a chip to see who reacted. You get one reaction per message — tap the same emoji again to remove it.
- Copy text, pin or unpin a message. A pinned message appears in a bar under the chat header; tap it to jump straight there.
- Edit or delete your own messages. Edited messages are marked with a small pencil so it's clear they changed.
Share photos, events and more
Tap the + in the message box to open the "Share with the team" sheet. Depending on what you're allowed to do, you can share:
- Photo, Camera or Video — pick from your library or capture something new, add an optional caption, and send. Photos appear as "Sent a photo" in the chat list and videos as "Sent a video".
- GIF — search and pick an animated GIF.
- Event — search for an event and share it into the conversation.
- Post — pick a post to share; it shows as "Shared: {title}".
- Poll — build a quick poll right inside the chat.
You can also reach chat the other way round: "Share in chat" buttons on events, photos, line-ups and posts open a conversation with that item ready to send.
Mentions and muting
To get someone's attention, type @ and pick their name from the list of people in that chat. Their name is inserted into your message, and when you send it they get a notification.
If a chat gets too busy, mute it: tap the bell in the chat header, or use the Notifications pill on the chat info page. You'll see a confirmation that notifications are muted or enabled. You can mute and unmute any chat individually whenever you like.
Muting only silences the general chatter. If someone @mentions you by name, you'll still get a notification so you don't miss a message meant for you.
Chat info, members and search
Tap the chat name in the header to open the chat info page. There you can:
- Change a group or team chat's emoji avatar and rename it, if you have permission.
- See the Members list, grouped by role with "YOU" and "ADMIN" badges. Use Add to bring someone in, or the "×" to remove a member (you can't remove people from the team chat or remove yourself).
- Browse the Media tab to find everything that's been shared in the chat.
- Leave the conversation from a group or role chat (the team chat is always there).
To find something, use the Search chats field at the top of your inbox. It looks through the messages in your conversations and filters the list by chat name; tap a result to jump into that conversation.
Some actions depend on your permissions — creating chats, renaming, adding or removing members, sharing certain content, pinning and deleting others' messages. If you don't have a permission, the button simply won't appear. Your own messages are always yours to edit or delete.
